After the annual analysis on the audience and use of social media in Italy , I propose an update on the use of instant messaging services during the first six months of 2022. The analysis is based on Audiweb surveys powered by Nielsen , which I managed to intercept. The data is the average of the mobile chat audiences (tablets and smartphones). The user base is between 18 and 74 years old, therefore slightly underestimated compared to real usage. WhatsApp is the favorite chat for 33 million Italians WhatsApp confirms itself as the most loved messaging app by Italians. On average in the first half of 2022 it was used by 33.1 million people. It also reached a peak of around 35 million users in June.
Compared to the corresponding months of the previous year, there was a India Mobile Number Data negligible drop of 1.4%, while looking further back in time one can appreciate its growth: in 2019 the average number of users was 31.8 million. WhatsApp is also the most assiduously used chat. On average in the first months of this year it was used for 10 hours and 50 minutes per person per month, with a peak of 11 hours and 29 minutes in January. Substantially stable compared to the previous year. Facebook Messenger in free fall Facebook Messenger remains the second most used messaging application in Italy. There were around 17.3 million average users in the first part of 2022. But the drop compared to the previous year was 21%, equal to 4.5 million fewer people. This is a sign that Zuckerberg's app is having difficulty finding its place compared to its acquired sister WhatsApp. The average usage time in the first half of 2022 was approximately 50 minutes per person, per month. This value is also down 34% compared to the previous year.
Telegram conquers 15.5 million Italians In third place, by number of users, we find Telegram which attracts around 15.5 million Italians monthly. Despite the growth achieved in recent years, this latest survey shows a decline of 7% compared to the first six months of 2021. Despite this, the average usage time in 2022 remains high: on average people use Russian Durov's chat for 2 hours and 9 minutes per month, 16% more than the previous year. The Discord Surprise For the first time I managed to obtain Discord data, a messaging application created to satisfy a need of gamers and now used to aggregate different communities with common interests (for example that of NFT enthusiasts). It is not a simple chat, but a place for discussion through text, audio and video. The Italians who used Discord in 2022 were 1.9 million, up 29% compared to the previous year.
